Meet The Team In Space Jam: A New Legacy Posters

It's game on with LeBron, Bugs and co.

Should you require some nostalgia pumped directly into your bloodstream this week, the brand new artwork for Space Jam: A New Legacy might be able to provide it. The Tune Squad are etching ever closer with their comeback tour this year, and reminding us just what’s in store, there’s a brand new pile of posters showing LeBron James (at least, we think it’s him going by beard alone) standing alongside Bugs Bunny and co., bigging up the sequel we’d never imagined happening, but totally is. Check them all out in the tweet below.

The history of getting this film off the bench has been a fascinating one, with several names being passed around as far back as 1997 to take over from Michael Jordan as the live-action star teaming up with the Looney Tunes. Spy Jam had Jackie Chan involved in a follow-up film, while Race Jam was in the works with NASCAR star Jeff Gordan. There was also a pitch to see Tiger Woods step in, and at one point, Tony Hawk was set to fly like an eagle in Skate Jam

Eventually, in 2014, the ball started rolling for Space Jam: A New Legacy with LeBron James taking the lead and Ryan Coogler producing. It hit a few bumps with directing duties going from Justin Lin, who eventually left the project, followed by Terrence Nance. After he bailed, Girls Trip director Malcolm D. Lee took over what sounds like a consistently nutty film that may even outdo the original.

Space Jam: A New Legacy will focus on James and his son Dom (Cedric Joe) – who end up trapped in a virtual reality run by antagonistic AI, Al-G Rhythm (Don Cheadle). To get back to the real world, James must head out on the basketball court with his teammates Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig and Lola Bunny, playing against Al’s band of bad guys.

If that doesn’t sound nutty enough, rumours have been rumbling for some time that Warner Bros. are raiding their back catalogue of films to bring iconic characters onto the court for Space Jam: A New Legacy as well. Leaked footage revealed that the Joker, IT’s Pennywise, and Jim Carrey’s The Mask (which the star is supposedly voicing) would be making cameos. There’s also going to be appearances from familiar faces from Harry Potter and The Matrix. Of course, nothing screams kid-friendly like killer clowns and Morpheus?

Of course, this is all speculation for the time being, but we won’t have long to see if there’s any truth to it. Space Jam: A New Legacy is one of the many titles heading to HBO Max in the U.S., set for release on July 16. Expect a trailer not being too far away and LeBron James going one on one with Stephen King’s most terrifying creation while the Tazmanian Devil watches from the sidelines. I know. I read it too.
