Want to hear a howler? In Universal’s continuous efforts to make us all stop retweeting that Dark Universe team photo, Variety has confirmed the studio is considering Ryan Gosling to grow teeth, nails and intense facial fur with a brand new take on The Wolfman. Bet you didn’t see that coming, did you?
The news comes following on from Universal’s absolute banger of a recovery effort with Leigh Whannel’s The Invisible Man adaptation starring Elizabeth Moss. Sources say that a number of directors have been offered to put Gosling on a leash (steady) for the film, with one particular name getting mentioned being Corey Finley of HBO’s recent movie, Bad Education. That’s the one with Hugh Jackman, not Jack Whitehall.
Like The Invisible Man before it, word is that the film will be given a modern-day setting, with Jake Gyllenhaal’s Nightcrawler getting mentioned as the kind of tone it will be aiming for. Might we see Gosling’s iteration of The Wolfman as a videotaping ambulance chaser who’s bark is worse when he bites? More importantly, could Universal still be aiming for a more subtle Dark Universe attempt of world-building and somehow he ends up crossing paths with Elizabeth Moss in that scary see-through suit?
Who can say? We thought a good horror remake was once in a blue moon, but if he agrees on The Wolfman, Gosling’s next hairy adventure might change that. We’ll be keeping an eye on this one, with a silver bullet in reach just in case.
