Russell Crowe Joins Thor: Love & Thunder

Strength and honour and thunder.

What foolish mortals, we are. We thought that the cast list for Thor: Love and Thunder couldn’t get any bigger. We assumed the hammer-chucking hero’s next adventure peaked the second we saw leaked pics of Melissa McCarthy dressed as Hela. Heck no! It seems that Taika Waititi has added another big name to the roster in the form of Russell Crowe proving that there is plenty more space for top-tier talent to be squeezed in for the (second) strongest Avenger.

Word shot across the rainbow bridge and was confirmed by Deadline that the former Gladiator and Oscar-winning star will be making an appearance after he was spotted with Waititi and the cast including Natalie Portman, who is returning as Jane Foster, and the Grandmaster himself, Jeff Goldblum. Shortly after and the thunder from down under himself, Chris Hemsworth, posted a picture on Instagram with his wife Elsa Pataky, and Crowe as well.

It turns out these snaps were no mere coincidence after sources have confirmed to Deadline that Crowe is definitely making an appearance in Thor: Love and Thunder, but specifics on his role are top-secret. With that said, given the big names turning up as cameos (with the likes of Matt Damon, Sam Neill and Luke Hemsworth reprising their roles as the theatre troupe from Thor: Ragnarok), don’t be surprised if Crowe rocks up, drops a few jokes and dips out in a blaze of ridiculous glory.

Currently, that seems more of a certainty than the plot we’ve yet to get confirmation on. As revealed at the last Comic-Con when we could all breathe in the same space, Waititi announced that Portman would be back for Thor: Love and Thunder after not making an appearance in Ragnarok, and she’ll be following the path of her comic book character. See, at one point, Jane replaced Thor as the god of thunder, becoming the wielder of Mjolnir and even part-time Avenger. The transformation came at a cost, though, because when she wasn’t in her god-like form, Jane was suffering from a serious battle with cancer, which increased every time she picked up the hammer. It’s a fairly heavy story to tackle in the MCU. Still, given that WandaVision and Falcon and the Winter Solider are handling equally tough topics, it’s falling in line with Marvel’s current trajectory.

Besides that mad cast list already mentioned, Thor: Love and Thunder will also see the return of Jaimie Alexander as Sif, Guardians of the Galaxy Chris Pratt, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn and Vin Diesel, and winner Christian Bale will star as the villain, Gorr the God Butcher. The current king of Asgard Tessa Thompson will also be back as Valkyrie, and Waititi will be reprising his role as scissor-fearing sidekick, Korg. You’ll see them all in action when Thor: Love and Thunder arrives in cinemas on May 6, 2022.
