What was rumoured has now been shot up as full-on confirmation, with news that Cate Blanchett is teaming with Eli Roth in the upcoming Borderlands adaptation. There’s a sentence we never thought we’d see.
Confirmed by Lionsgate themselves, the word is out that Blanchett will be donning some crazy hair and magic powers (Hela familiar, right?) as Lilith, the iconic character from the franchise that started back in 2009. She’ll also be reuniting with director Eli Roth, who directed her in the spooky kids films, The House with a Clock in Its Walls. Yep, still panic about typing that title.
Initially taking place on the planet of Pandora (no, not that one) Borderlands kicked things off with Lilith as a playable character. A legendary thief and siren who uses her magical powers to carve our her own little corner of Pandora and cause all sorts of madness, it sounds like a wild role for Blanchett to sign on for.
Hopefully continuing to turn the tide on naff video game adaptations, the film is currently being written by Craig Mazin, who scribbled out the incredibly cheery, and in no way harrowing one-off series that is Chernobyl. The film is also being produced by Avi and Ari Arad through Arad Prods.
Expect more names to be added to the landing party of Borderlands in the coming weeks.
